Robert Lopez Files Action Against Coat of Arms Over “Lower East Side” Trademark
Published on October 27th, 2011

Clinton Street resident Robert Lopez is experiencing a banner year of exposure for his beloved LES Clothing Co. imprint. Each time fashion behemoths attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the neighborhood designation, Lopez is there keeping them in check. Recent lawsuits of trademark infringement included cases against Aeropostale, Urban Outfitters, and the Gap.
Now, for the second time in a week, the litigious Lopez is on the offensive. This time he’s attacking three separate parties, with Lower East Side boutique Coat of Arms (“COA”) at the center of it all. Firstly, the threads shop at 43 Clinton Street teamed up with Mitchell & Ness for some LES-branded caps that are sold in the store. Then in a separate instance, COA collaborated with Champion (i.e. Haneswear) to produce a jersey that says “Lower Deck Side.” Each entity has been named defendant in the formal complaint filed yesterday. Got that?
